5 SKINCARE TERMS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW

5 SKINCARE TERMS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW

Nov 26, 2022

Reine Africaine

Once in a while, we all get lost in skincare terms. For some, toners, serum, essence are magic words from the moon, even though it's all over their social feeds. As funny as that may sound, it's true, because I used to be just like that.

Learning about skin care can be daunting. A hundred Google searches, and you realize, it isn't as chill as your fav skincare influencer makes it seem like. There's no giving up on those skincare goals now!

At Reine Africaine, we decided everyone is going to get skinducated. When we say skinducated, we mean brushing up on your skincare knowledge. No more getting lost on those terms. It's time to get in the know!

1. TONERS

This should come immediately after cleansing. Depending on the type of toner you use, its benefit may range from cleansing leftover dirt and impurities even after using a cleanser, removing excess oil and gently exfoliating to feeding your skin an added dose of moisture. You can never get it wrong with the right toner in your skincare routine.

At Reine Africaine, we recommend using an alcohol-free toner. Research reveals that alcohol could potentially increase the risk of skin irritation and excessive dryness.

This Eden Elixir from Arami Essentials might just be that alcohol-free toner you've been looking for.

We absolutely love this toner, because it contains rosewater. Rosewater is the go-to for hydration and everything in between.

2. SERUM

These are more lightweights than moisturizers and contain higher concentrations of active ingredients - meaning they are the real GOAT when it comes to dealing with a specific skin condition. From hyperpigmentation to acne, there really is a serum for any and every concern. In a skincare routine, it comes after cleansing and just before moisturizing.

There are hundreds of serums out there suited for your specific skin concern. But, here's our fav serum at the moment.

This hydrating serum from Junederm is much more than your regular hydrating serum. It contains 5% niacinamide, a plumping peptide complex, amino acids, sodium PCA, panthenol, glycerin, saccharide isomerate and more humectants. Thus reviving and brightening skin.

Dealing with dull and tired looking skin? Then try this facial serum and your glowy, younger looking skin can thank us later.

3. BROAD-SPECTRUM

When it comes to sunscreen, broad-spectrum should be the go-to for us on this side of the equator. Broad-spectrum means it protects your skin from both UVA and UVB rays.

We recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or above. Wondering what SPF means or if you should use sunscreen? Here's a link to learn more about sunscreen (insert link to 'should black people use sunscreen')

As people of color, finding the right sunscreen that doesn't leave a white cast can be cumbersome. Not to worry! We've got you covered.

This sunscreen from Skinscience Africa is ticking all our boxes. No white cast, check. SPF 50, double check.

4. NON-COMEDOGENIC

If you've an oily skin type or you're acne prone, then you must have heard someone recommending you get a non-comedogenic product. It simply means a product that does not clog pores. Clogged pores can lead to acne.

5. ANTIOXIDANTS

They have the ability to protect your skin against damage caused by free radicals. These free radicals are chemically unstable molecules that can cause damage to skin cells. Free radicals break down skin's collagen resulting in blemishes and premature skin aging.

There's a diverse range of antioxidants, from vitamin C to Niacinamide. The key is finding the one that works best for your skin type and concern.

The Rejuvenating Rosehip Oil from AMOKÉ skincare isn't just your everyday oil. This oil is enriched with antioxidants, vitamin A, C and E. That's a triple dose of skin nourishing antioxidants.
If you're a skincare junkie, please hit those keys and let us know what skin care term we should include. Ordering some of our recommended products? Yes! Do let us know how much you love them.
