WHAT IS VITILIGO?
Often dismissed as superficial, although its effect can be psychologically devastating, considering the distress it causes in social relations daily. Even in an evolving world, there are still more questions than answers when it comes to vitiligo. For those who have this condition, there are a few things they can do with their skincare routine. But first, let’s learn a bit more about this issue!
Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition that causes the immune system to attack skin cells, resulting in the loss of pigment. It causes the loss of skin color in blotches, thus making the skin, and sometimes the hair, turn white in patches. The skin condition is most pronounced among people with dark skin due to the high contrast between normal skin tone and the white patches. Vitiligo has no cure, although there are treatment options to help manage the condition.
SKINCARE TIPS FOR VITILIGO
1. Apply sunscreen
This is the holy grail of vitiligo. Use sunscreen everyday, especially in areas that lack pigment and are prone to burning. Use an SPF of at least 30.
2. Use an antioxidant serum
Research reveals there is a deficiency of antioxidant substances in vitiliginous skin.Clinical trials with antioxidants as an adjunct to UVB phototherapy have shown encouraging results. Do consult a dermatologist before using any serum.
3. Avoid Injuries
Skin injury triggers new patches, for some people.
4. Preserve Wellness
Your skin cannot thrive if you aren't in a good place with your health. Embrace a healthy lifestyle, which involves eating healthy because we all know you become what you eat.
Experts say proactively taking care of mental health is key to living with vitiligo. These may involve journaling, exercise, therapy or even joining a community of people living dappled.
